What's New?

Welcome Tee!
Joining us after his recent experience as a member of a youth-led action research team, Tee will be facilitating a youth-led action research team called BALYHS, Bay Area LGBTTQHI Youth Health Scan. BALYHS will conduct a youth-led assessment of the health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited, queer and heterosexual, and intersex (LGBTTQHI) youth in the Bay Area. Hosted by the SF LGBT Center, Tee was a member of the Youth Empowerment Team that documented the needs of homeless LGBTQ youth in San Francisco. This project will run through the end of 2007.

You're OUT!
Did you know that because of their size, many continuation schools are not eligible for additional state funding under the Williams lawsuit? A youth-led action research project at American Legion High School in Sacramento is examining how they can improve educational quality and college access at their continuation school. This project will be one of a cohort of youth-led action research projects seeking to understand how to support the educational needs of continuation school students. Stay tuned to learn what they find!

Have CURAJ
Youth In Focus is a member of CURAJ, Community-University Research and Action for Justice. Began in 2006, CURAJ is the result of a long-known need to respond to the wide disparities in community health and development of the Central Valley. The inception for CURAJ came out of a 2005 symposium entitled, "The New Face of California: The Great Central Valley," and sponsored by the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at the UC Berkeley School of Law. CURAJ is unique in its ability to bring together leading academics and community-based organizations to identify, critique and respond to social justice concerns that most matter to local communities in the Central Valley.

Where There's Data, There's A Way
A cross-district team of youth in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) will use existing school district data as part of their youth-led action research project. The nine-member youth team will be conducting a youth-led action research project to understand how to increase youth leadership and ensure educational equality in OUSD. The youth team will be using OUSD's "Use Your Voice" youth survey data, analyzing it and holding focus groups with youth at various high schools to get their take on "what this data means."
